Rancho Cucamonga adopts new approach to marketing

Story By Neil Nisperos | Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

RANCHO CUCAMONGA — The city plans to introduce a program it hopes will help market itself as a potential location for businesses.

A key component of the Bring Your Business to Rancho Cucamonga program is the website byb2rc.com.

There, residents can fill out an online city form suggesting their employer relocate to the city. Participants get recognized as a community leader, with a certificate signed by the City Council, in addition to receiving two free tickets to upcoming Quakes baseball game, and the chance to win the use of a luxury skybox at an upcoming Quakes game.

Councilman Marc Steinorth helped conceive of the program, which was developed by city staff. Steinorth said the marketing tool is utilized frequently in the private sector, and this is a novel approach for a city.

“Our residents are the best sales people our community can employ,” Steinorth said. “It’s a positive for the businesses, the residents, and this is also a positive for public sector thinking. We’re taking a private sector concept and using it to benefit a municipality. In my opinion, if we are able to do this successfully, this is a blueprint for other cities to impact their business climate without having the state redevelopment money we used to have.”

The city will utilize the submitted employer suggestions as part of a call list to contact businesses who may potentially decide to move to Rancho Cucamonga.

“There’s so much pride in our community,” said Assistant City Manager Linda Daniels. “This is a marketing economic development approach to capture that pride. People who live here would like to see their company here.”

Officials say the project is a way to get residents involved in civic participation.

“What we’re looking to do is add the ‘personal’ back into reaching out,” said Steinorth. “It would be an easy for the city to put an ad out. This is a relationship referral, so it’s a warmer approach.”

Daniels said the project is expected to be fully launched at the end of the month.
